What is Propolis?

What is Propolis?

Bee propolis is a powerful natural product made by bees gathering from different temperate plant resins, leaves and buds.

The word of “propolis” is derived from Greek, in which pro word stands for “defense” and polis for “community or city” which means this natural, resinous product is used in defense of beehives in other words. Propolis has been called “bee glue” and “bee penicilin” due to its strong waxy and mechanical functions. With its beneficial properties, propolis is used as a structure material in the construction and repair of their beehives.

What is Propolis Used for?

Bees use propolis for sealing cracks, openings and smoothing the surface of beehive as a protective material against invaders like lizards, snakes, buds, rain, wind and so forth. It is used to kill germs and to protect the bee colony.

It also provides thermal insulation to the hive and protects it from cold weather conditions.

Propolis has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antimycotic and antifungal properties. Therefore, it provides and maintains the antiseptic environment in the hive. Honeybees use propolis to protect larvae and themselves against microrganism also. It has a high antioxidant capacity due to its rich content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds.

Properties of Propolis

Propolis is hard and brittle in its natural form and it becomes a soft, pliable and sticky substance when it is heated, which is around 25°C and 45°C. It has characteristic and pleasant aromatic smell and it’s color varies from yellow green to red and to dark brown. The color of propolis depends on the origin of the resin source and age.

Propolis is a complex mixture and generally composed of 50% resins, 30% waxes, 10% essential oils, 5% bee pollen and 5% of various organic compounds. 3% of these organic compounds include Vitamin A, Vitamin B3, Vitamin E and zinc. In addition to these substances, propolis also contains amino acids, enzymes and flavonoids. Chemical characterization of propolis depends on the geographical floral region, treatments of raw material and time of collection. Propolis has more than 300 compounds and the majority of these compounds are different forms of polyphenols. Propolis contains the polyphenols called flavonoids.

Propolis from different origins consists of different constituents.

Considering different constitutents and complex structure of propolis, it can not be used as a raw material directly in its natural form. Propolis must be purified by extraction with a suitable solvent. Many of the bactericidal components of propolis are soluble in water or alcohol and it removes the inert material and helps to preserve the desired nutritional compounds such as polyphenolic fraction. Flavonoids and phenolic acids benefits are considered to be more stronger than the other propolis constituents.

Biological activities of propolis are built on the presence of flavonoids, phenolic acids and ethers obtained from plant derived substances. Even though propolis is an animal product, considerable part of its compounds responsible for biological activities are plant based.

Propolis Tincture (Drops)

Propolis tincture is a liquid form of propolis. Raw, hard propolis is first extracted by wheat alcohol to liquefy the healing substances.

Wheat alcohol is a natural alcohol and it is derived from the fermentation process of wheat and it naturally occurs in many foods such as orange juice, pickles, banana, potato and vinegar.

If a person consumes 20 drops of propolis per day, the amount of alcohol the person gets with this product is about 0.15 ml which equals to only a quarter amount of orange juice.

The amount of alcohol in the tincture determines the proportion of propolis in the liquid: the stronger the alcohol, the better the substances dissolve - the weaker the alcohol, the less the propolis can be extracted.

Propolis tincture can also be applied externally as well as internally.

Propolis Powder

Propolis powder is the closest form to pure propolis. It is mostly capsulised in order to make the consumption easier. Propolis capsules are for internal use and taken orally.

Bee&You offers chewable tablets for kids and ingestible tablets for adults. Recommended daily consumption is 2 tablets.
